King Baldwin IV

The Leper King

Diagnosed with leprosy at a young age, he continued to rule and lead military campaigns despite his debilitating condition. He often wore a helmet to conceal his appearance during battles, which became iconic of his reign.

Battle of Montgisard (1177)

One of Baldwins most significant victories where, with a much smaller army, he decisively defeated Saladin's forces when he was just 16 years old, thwarting his attempts to invade Jerusalem.

Skilled Military Leader

Known for his brilliance as a military commander, he led the Crusader forces to several notable victories, against the forces of Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria.

The Young King

Became King of Jerusalem in 1174 at just 13 years old, following the death of his father. Despite his youth and illness, he demonstrated exceptional leadership skills.

Commanding from a Bedridden State

As his leprosy progressed, Baldwin still managed to command his troops from his sickbed, demonstrating a remarkable will to lead even in the most debilitating conditions.

Skilful Diplomat

Baldwin used strategic marriages and alliances to bolster his military position, including securing key relations with local Christian and Muslim factions, helping to maintain stability in the Crusader Kingdom.
